Frequently Asked Questions

Preparation

What do I need to tell my contractor or tile installer?

Most contractors and tile installers understand what needs to be done to accommodate a frameless shower door, however, it is always a good idea to have an explicit discussion to be sure you are all on the same page. The main points to discuss are:

  1. Make sure there is wood blocking in the wall where the shower hinges are. This can be achieved using 2x4s or 2x6s in the wall. There should not be any plumbing or electrical in this portion of the wall. Typically, we install shower hinges between 8" and 10" from the top and bottom of the glass.
  2. Pre-slope the shower pan towards the drain. Grout and natural stone tiles are porous and soak in moisture. If the pan underneath is not properly sloped towards the drain, the grout will begin to crumble and you may incur water damage over time.
  3. The shower pan liner should never be cut where it meets the wall on the top of the curb. The liner needs to be folded tightly against the wall.
  4. Coat the back of the tile with Thinset/Mortar as well as the wall for maximum adhesion. It should be consistent and solid along the entire backside of each tile.
  5. All horizontal tiles should be sloped between 1/8" and 3/16" inwards such that any water that lands on a shower curb or shelf naturally runs off into the drain.

Please take a look at our preparation tips page for a more extensive explanation of shower prep.

Another company told me I can’t have a frameless shower door, but is that really true?

It depends on your situation! We hear this a lot when we encounter fiberglass shower stalls or walls that terminate at difficult angles. We enjoy special projects and have special methods of installing shower doors in these situations. Please give us a call and send photos to our office phone (678-477-1389), office email (office@showerdoorguy.com), or Contact Us Page, and we will be happy to help you!

Can you remove my shower?

Yes! We will remove your old shower door, clean up any excess silicone, patch the holes left behind, and dispose of your old enclosure. We provide this service at a very low rate as a courtesy to our customers and cannot be held liable for any unforeseen circumstances that may be uncovered as a result of removing your shower. Examples include cracked or broken tiles, tiles coming off of the wall or curb, stains from the previous framing, etc.

Do you repair showers?

We are not able to repair framed shower doors. There are too many manufacturers and pieces involved for us to be able to resolve issues at a fair price. We would be happy to quote you for a new, frameless shower enclosure if you would like.

We can occasionally repair a frameless shower door, particularly if it requires a minor adjustment to the door or hinges or other minor repair work like silicone. We cannot however, repair leaks or guarantee that we could resolve a leak especially on a shower door that is not our own because we do not know the origin of the leak or the history of the shower.

Can you install a shower door I bought from Home Depot or online?

We are not able to install materials that are not our own. We cannot be proficient in installing every online offering, guarantee the quality of the system, or be held liable for damages to your materials. For these reasons, we are unable to install enclosures that are not purchased from our shop.

Can I use my own hardware or handle?

We will allow you to use your own handle if you would prefer, however, we will need to be advised on the exact specifications of the handle in order to cut the glass appropriately. We will not be able to install your handle because we cannot be liable for your materials.

Frameless Shower Doors

What are the advantages of a frameless shower door?

There are many advantages to a frameless shower door, including:

  • It is easy to detect and resolve water leaks.
  • Cleaning and maintenance is much easier. Water does not harbour in the framing like it would in a framed shower resulting in leaks and water damage as a result of mildew build-up.
  • Frameless showers feel and look more substantial.
  • These enclosures add value to your home without a large remodel investment.
  • Your bathroom will look and feel bigger and more open.

With so many advantages, you might wonder what the disadvantages of frameless shower doors are. There are only two that we can think of.

  • In certain situations, you may have more design flexibility with a framed shower door.
  • Framed showers tend to be more water tight than a frameless shower. This doesn’t typically present a problem unless your shower is poorly built or poorly tiled.
What is the difference between framed, semi-frameless, and frameless shower doors?

Different professionals use different terminology, but in general, a framed shower includes aluminum framing all the way around each individual piece of glass. A frameless shower does not include aluminum channeling and is entirely frameless on all four sides. Semi-frameless shower doors can be anything in between. Take a look at our gallery page for more photo examples!

Do frameless showers leak?

Frameless shower doors are not water tight. They are considered a partition. That being said, there are many things we can do to prevent leaks beginning with your tile installation. Take a look at our preparation tips to learn more about what to tell your tile installer.

Are frameless shower doors safe?

Frameless shower doors have been around since the early 1990s. We have never had any safety issues associated with shower doors, but we are very cautious when it comes to inspecting glass for minor imperfections and general glass care which may result in damage.

Can I have a frameless shower door on a fiberglass stall or a tub?

Yes! Some companies will not install heavy glass shower doors on acrylic shower inserts because the inserts are typically hollow and do not provide enough support to manage the weight of the glass. To bypass this, we use an aluminum header bar or other support to reduce the weight of the glass on the acrylic. We also have a myriad of semi-frameless solutions that work well for acrylic pan inserts.

How do I keep my shower clean?

It depends on whether or not you've selected a glass coating for your shower door or not. If you do not have a glass coating, you may use Zep Tub and Tile on your glass. If you do have the glass coatings, you might try an ammonia free cleaner or even Dawn soap with water. These can be applied with a BLUE Scotch Brite scrubbing pad. DO NOT use the green Scotch Brite pad. It will scratch your glass

I found a picture of what I like on Pinterest. Can you do it?

Pinterest and other designer inspiration can be a lot of fun to work with and try to replicate, however, some designs will not work in certain spaces. We are happy to work with you on your design and look forward to seeing your finished product!

Are frameless shower doors expensive? What contributes to the price?

Frameless shower doors are not a cheap product, however, they are a great way to enhance the appearance of a bathroom without the expense of a remodel. Typically the price is based on a combination of size, hardware, and labor.

How long will my frameless shower door last?

If built properly, a frameless shower door can last more than 20 years.

How long does it take to get a shower door?

Our lead time can vary, but typically we run about 2-3 weeks from the time you submit your 50% deposit to the time we install your shower enclosure.

How thick is frameless shower glass?

Most of the glass we use is 3/8" thick clear tempered glass. In some instances, we may require thicker or thinner glass like 1/2" or 1/4" thick. This will be discussed ahead of time if this is required.

How long does it take to install the shower door itself?

Installation time depends on a lot of factors, however most installations take about 2 hours. Removing a pre-existing shower enclosure typically takes an additional hour.

About Us

Do you have a showroom?

We have a showroom in Norcross off of Oakbrook Parkway where you can take a look at many of our most popular options! We also have hundreds of photos on our gallery page that can be filtered to your specific needs.

Why should I choose you over your competitors?

We are offering the best quality product for the best value in a timely manner. As a family owned and operated company, we pride ourselves in doing the right thing. Our technicians are trained by our owner first, and our team of installers next. They are equipped with Brad’s 30+ years of experience and the latest techniques from the field.

Do you fabricate your own glass?

We do not fabricate our own glass. We have a very strong relationship with our glass fabricators and prefer to focus on the quality of our designs, materials, and installations.

What areas do you service?

Our service area flexes based on how busy we are at any given time, however, we generally service as far west as Mableton, as far north as Ball Ground, as far east as Statham, and as far south as Midtown Atlanta. If you have a special project outside of these areas, please feel free to give us a call. We are happy to discuss the project and work with you if we are able to.

Is your pricing competitive? Do you price match?

While we can never be sure how our pricing compares to our competitors, we regularly review our pricing based on the current market, material costs, and customer feedback to ensure we are remaining competitive. We cannot always price match because we are never sure exactly what materials we are being compared against. We do not use channels as structural clamps, and we do not compromise on our door hinges. We use the best materials from CR Laurence and other high-end hardware vendors, and we use specialty silicones for different tile types. We pride ourselves in our attention to detail and quality of installation.

If you are looking for a better price, please let us know. We are happy to value engineer our design or discuss the reasons behind the hardware or design we have quoted.

What does your warranty include?

We offer a three year limited warranty on materials and labor. While warranty calls are not common, our typical warranty call is a routine door adjustment which most commonly occurs immediately after installation when the hinge gaskets compress or seasonally as older homes settle or move. We occasionally receive a call soon after installation about minor silicone gaps which we are more than happy to repair. We are not, however, able to clean and reapply silicone over the lifetime of the shower. This is considered routine shower maintenance and must be redone every 3-5 years depending on your tile type (man-made product versus natural stone).

How long have you been in business?

Brad started the Shower Door Guy in 2011, however, he has been installing shower doors since the late 1980s and was one of the first installers to adopt frameless glass shower doors when they came into popularity in the early 1990s.

Do you remodel? Do you install tile?

We do not remodel or install tile, however, we work with some incredible professionals in our industry and would be happy to pass along their information for your specific service area and requirements. Give us a call!

Do you only do showers?

Most of the work we do is centered around custom frameless shower enclosures, but we also provide our customers with other custom interior glass like shelving, mirrors, cabinet glass, table top glass, closet or office partitions, food service partitions, baby gates, etc. We would be happy to help you with your special project!

Are you insured?

We are fully insured with general liability and worker's compensation. Please let us know if your building or HOA requires proof of insurance on file.

Where are you located?

We are located in Norcross, GA off of Oakbrook Pkwy between Jimmy Carter and Indian Trail. Our address is 5555 Oakbrook Pkwy, Suite 130, Norcross, GA 30093.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

We do not currently offer financing or payment plans however, if this is something you need to discuss, we can work with you to accommodate your needs.

What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept credit cards, debit cards, and standard bank transfers through QuickBooks, however if you prefer to pay with Cash, check, Zelle, Venmo, or Cash app, we are also able to accommodate these methods of payment!

Do you take American Express?

We prefer other card types as our fees are significantly higher for American Express credit cards.
